Royal Salute, known as the “King of Whisky” for both its ties to the British Royal Family and its ultra-luxury whisky offerings, has introduced the 21 Year Old Snow Polo Edition. Officially released in early November, the 21 Year Old Snow Polo Edition celebrates the exciting sport with Royal Salute’s first-ever blended grain whisky.

The 21 Year Old Snow Polo Edition is the latest product to join Royal Salute’s lineup of limited edition 21 Year Old Polo Blended Scotch whiskies. In 2018 Royal Salute launched its 21 Year Old Beach Polo Edition (bottled in a striking turquoise-colored ceramic flagon), while the 21 Year Old Polo Edition was introduced in 2017 (bottled in a green ceramic flagon).

Royal Salute, which is part of Chivas Regal and within the international portfolio of premium international brands owned by Pernod Ricard, was launched on June 2, 1953 as a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II on the day of her coronation. The brand is named after the traditional 21-gun salute, and each of its whiskies, including each of the Limited Edition Polo Edition series, are aged for a minimum of 21 years.

Sandy Hyslop, Master Blender for Royal Salute developed the Snow Polo Edition with Royal Salute’s World Polo Ambassador, Malcolm Borwick, professional polo player and whisky connoisseur. One of the best-known players in the world, Borwick has played polo with many of the top-ranked professionals in the world as well as the Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Sussex. His knowledge about whisky is impressive as Borwick is not just a symbolic ambassador for the company. Indeed, Borwick has spent countless hours at Royal Salute’s distilleries and well-understands the business behind the whisky.

Borwick, whose signature appears on the bottle, was intimately involved with the creation of each of the Polo Editions. “I was involved from A to Zed,” he exclaims. “Every single aspect of the product is a reflection of myself and it reflects my character. Over my entire career, I have been a traditional, straight down the line polo player. I am well known inside the sport for that level of integrity and hopefully that is reflected in the whisky.”

Borwick and Hyslop set out to create a whisky that reflects the atmosphere and the altitude of the game. “Your first thought of snow is cold and you want something warm—-you want that hot toddy feeling,” says Borwick. “So, we wanted to develop a whisky that is really creamy and indulgent—-one that really warms you up from the inside out.”

Innovation is a priority for Royal Salute and the 21 Year Old Snow Polo Edition is an example of the company’s desire to create new products as it is the first blended grain whisky in the brand’s entire portfolio. “While we have a lot of legacy from the past, we do want to bring modernity to life,” says Jean-Christophe Coutures, Chairman and Chief Executive of Chivas Brothers. As a result, Royal Salute is exploring different types of finishes and blending. “A lot of innovation will come to play, but never compromising on the quality,” adds Coutures.

The all-new limited edition Scotch evokes the brisk snowy white atmosphere that surrounds a snow polo event with its ABV (alcohol by volume) content of 46.5%, which is fittingly, the latitude coordinates of St. Moritz where the sport originated. The ABV is slightly higher than the other whiskies in the Royal Salute collection

Master Blender Hyslop worked with five grain distilleries located in Scotland and used their oldest casks available to masterfully create the blended grain whisky. “The notes on this whisky are home comfort with a creaminess that is like enjoying a chocolate or a butter scotch candy on a cold winter day,” says Hyslop. “It is creamy and luxurious.” The 21 Year Old Snow Polo Edition is best enjoyed over ice to release its depth of flavor. The resulting blend is distinctively sweet and rich with elegantly layered flavors of vanilla and toffee with a finish that is long and smooth, he adds.

Bottled in a striking pure white ceramic flagon with silver highlights, the Snow Polo edition displays beautifully when presented alongside the other two Royal Salute 21 Year Old Polo Editions. The flagon is presented inside a striking gift box that features an illustration of Borwick’s iconic red helmet, his signature and images of snow polo and alpine skis. The whisky is expected to sell through fast, as much of the production was pre-sold.

“From a whisky connoisseur’s point of view, it is a standout bottle he or she is going to want to hold and keep it for as long as they can,” says Borwick. “And as it is a limited edition run, it is not going to be available forever.”

A 35-year old sport, Snow Polo was founded in St. Moritz where the World Cup Snow Polo Championships are played every January. A fast-paced sport played on a snow-covered surface (it is played on frozen Lake St. Moritz in St. Moritz), snow polo offers a glamorous venue with spectators often donning fur coats while they sip whisky and champagne as they watch from the stands or sidelines. Snow Polo is also played in Aspen in Colorado; Cortina in Italy, Tianjin in China and Kitzbühel in Austria.

“Snow polo is a spectator sport like no other with each match delivering an undeniably thrilling atmosphere, set in breath-taking scenery of immaculate snow-peaked mountains,” says Borwick. “Royal Salute understands polo and the lifestyle it represents both on and off the field and is opening up the world of polo through the Royal Salute Polo Collection.”

Always pushing boundaries, Royal Salute is constantly creating new expressions for the ultra-luxury consumer. “Luxury is about substance for us,” says Mathieu Deslandes, Royal Salute’s Marketing Director. “It is about being the best of the best in the field. We aspire to offer the best whiskies in the world.”

The Royal Salute 21 Year Old Snow Polo Edition will be released for a limited time starting this month and is available at select luxury retailers worldwide at a suggested retail price of $155.
