Fans have been waiting patiently for new music from the multi-talented Harry Styles, and now it has finally arrived, just hours after they began to speculate that something would arrive sooner, rather than later thanks to a fun promotional website.

The pop-rocker’s new single “Lights Up” appeared somewhat surprisingly at midnight on October 11, immediately rousing those fans still awake to catch the track.

No matter what mood the listener is in, the new single from the former boy band member instantly lifts their spirits and puts a smile on their face. It’s use of a full band and what must have been a large backing chorus makes it difficult to label as pop or rock or some alternative (or maybe as alternative), but that’s par for the course for Styles.

With a chorus that reads, “Step into the light / It’s so bright sometimes / I’m not ever going back,” Styles has delivered the positivity 2019 so desperately needs. Whether it becomes a bestseller or not, the effort is more than welcome, and hopefully pop musicians around the world appreciate the beauty that is this single and incoporate it into what they’re working on.

“Lights Up” is Styles’ first single in two years, which is a long time in between drops in today’s fast-paced pop world. The song appears to be the first taste of his untitled sophomore album, which has been hotly anticipated essentially since he released the first.

After months of silence, fans of the rocker discovered a new website called DoYouKnowWhoYouAre.com, which allowed anybody to enter their name and receive some sort of compliment, all of which come with the signature, “Love, H.” It was quickly connected to Styles, and his legion of followers knew something exciting was imminent. Within just the past hour, the musician also shared what appears to be a still from a video and the single cover for “Lights Up,” confirming suspicions.

After One Direction officially went their separate ways in January 2016, Styles took his time crafting the solo album he wanted, and it was well-received by fans and critics alike. The set, which debuted at No. 1 on charts all around the world (including in his home country of the U.K. and in the U.S.), produced the global smash “Sign of the Times,” which quickly became his first solo top 10 single in a number of territories. A few other songs featured on Harry Styles reached rankings in several countries, but promotion of the project quieted fairly quickly.

Now, Styles may be gearing up for a major fourth quarter release, which may signify it contains a number of potential big hits.
