Odell Beckham Jr. Of Cleveland Browns Plays With $200,000 Watch On Wrist

Over the weekend, the NFL 2019 regular season kicked off. Week One of football was a little unusual, though, because for the first time in recent history, we saw a player wearing a watch during play. That’s right, receiver Odell Beckham Jr. with the Cleveland Browns wore a nearly $200,000 Richard Mille watch during play.

While we have witnessed tennis players wearing their watches on the courts (you can read about that here), we have not seen a football player in any position wearing a watch during this high-contact sport. This was Beckham’s first game with the Cleveland Browns and he caught seven passes – but it still didn’t help the Browns win against the Tennessee Titans.

The bright orange watch looked to be the RM 11-03 Automatic Winding Flyback Chronograph McLaren. First introduced in 2018 and created in a limited edition of just 500 pieces, the watches gave McLaren customers the chance to match their edition number of their McLaren Ultimate Series car to the number engraved on the caseback of the watch.

Richard Mille only signs on brand ambassadors who will wear their watches during play. However, Beckham Jr. is not a brand ambassador. Looks like he was just wearing his own watch.

Still, Richard Mille timepieces are built to take a beating. In fact the RM11-03 on Beckham’s wrist houses an automatic movement with the brand’s proprietary variable-geometry rotor that enables the rotor to adapt to the user’s activity level. The baseplate and bridges undergo extensive tests to ensure they can meet rigorous strength requirements set forth by the brand. For this watch, too, the case is made of carbon TPT® and orange Quartz TPT® that is extremely durable. Essentially 600 layers of parallel filaments derived from carbon fiber or silica threads are layered and woven for strength. There are also lightweight titanium inserts on the watch, which retails for $189,500.

According to NFL.com, Beckham was in violation of a league rule about wearing hard accessories during play. It will be interesting to see if he is fined. The one thing we can all say, though, is that Beckham Jr. obviously has good taste and an eye for color coordinating his watch to his uniform.
