My Workplace Style: How Morning Brew's Cofounder Curates His Desk for Success

Alex Lieberman knows how to create a productive workspace just about anywhere.

After all, the cofounder of Morning Brew, a daily newsletter for millennial business professionals, launched the company from his University of Michigan dorm room in 2015 as an easier-to-digest antidote to traditional business writing. “We’re creating content that makes people really excited about business,” he says.

Since Morning Brew’s early days, Lieberman and his cofounder Austin Reef have cycled through cafes, startup incubators and more, growing their readership to 1.4 million along the way. As their startup grows, the pair is curating an environment that inspires purposeful work and sharp focus. “We think deeply about everything from the art on the walls to the desks we’re using, to the technology we rely on,” says Lieberman. “How can we create an environment that’s both fun and productive, and that people get excited to come to every day?”

Here, Lieberman shares how his desk setup offers daily flexibility—with the help of a space-saving monitor that optimizes any kind of environment, whether a traditional workspace or a home.

For Lieberman, each day in the life of his burgeoning company is different than the last, so working in a space that can adapt to a dynamic, often unpredictable, schedule is important. Previously, a growing team and little storage space meant Lieberman’s desk was often too crowded to be usable. “Our team is like a family, but we're in a relatively cramped space with a lot of people, so desk space is minimal at best," he says.

Using a Samsung Space Monitor helps free up that valuable surface area, potentially upgrading smaller, more personal work environments in particular. And for Lieberman, whose professional surroundings and daily tasks have been ever-changing from the start, the option to seamlessly move his screen is a big boost for tackling projects in any location. It’s also a boon for presentations: when he wants to show colleagues his screen, he can now position the display much closer than before, he explains. “It’s so much more productive.”

Teamwork is top of mind for Lieberman. In order to cultivate an inspiring and motivating atmosphere for staff, he stocks plenty of Morning Brew swag, from coffee mugs to t-shirts. “These items are a constant reminder to reflect on what we’ve built so far and where we’re going,” says Lieberman. “We’ve done a lot with very little resources and a very young team.” Lieberman attributes much of that progress to collaboration and harnessing the collective strengths of colleagues—underscored by a glass plaque that he keeps on his desk featuring a quote from famed University of Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler. A graduation gift from a close friend, the plaque serves as a reminder to Lieberman “that collaboration is always stronger than individual work.”

Lieberman thrives on conversations with his colleagues when it comes to generating new ideas for the business. “I like to be surrounded by other people when I work because it gets my creative juices flowing,” he says. But for certain work, like writing and editing, Lieberman opts for a distraction-free environment where he can find an uninterrupted workflow. "I'll turn my phone off, disable social media on my computer, put headphones on and crank it out."

Lieberman also finds that a little fidgeting goes a long way in keeping him in the zone during important conversations: he’s often squeezing or tossing around an earth-shaped stress ball while on the phone, for instance, incorporating just the right amount of diversion to help him zero in on ideas. “I think my natural orientation is having my brain fire in 15 different directions,” says Lieberman. “I’m also just a sports junkie at heart, so I love to have a ball in the office to play around with.”
