Business Goes Mobile

Finally—an intelligent app that helps you get work done on the go.

Your mobile phone is a miracle of modern technology.

Just ask NASA. That iPhone in your pocket has 100,000 times the processing power of the computer that sent Apollo11 to the moon 50 years ago.

So why is work stuck in the past? Instead of a smooth mobile experience like the apps we use in our consumer lives, employees wrestle with unstructured workflows that require multiple texts, emails, or trips down the hall to get the simplest things done.

The good news: We’ve made one giant leap toward a more mobile enterprise with the release of Now Mobile.

Mobile transformation

Now Mobile is a simple, easy-to-use app that helps employees get work done on the go.

Why is it such a game changer? Because, like all the best consumer apps, Now Mobile is purpose-built. Instead of doing 100 things poorly, like most existing enterprise apps, it focuses on critical functions people need to get work done.

Here’s how Now Mobile has transformed three historically frustrating processes—saving me, my team, and the entire company a ton of time and untold headaches.

Productivity booster

Approvals, IT requests, booking a conference room. Now Mobile helps us escape this Bermuda Triangle of wasted time, productivity, and frustration.

Let’s start with approval requests. Expense reports, time off, a new employee laptop or cell phone plan—when these requests get buried in email, it aggravates everyone and an organization down. Today, I can approve a request with two taps—one to open the app and another to approve or reject. Boom. And because our platform can be extended through integrations, I can add approvals from other systems, such as Concur.

IT requests are a major enterprise pain point. But now if I’m having an issue with my laptop, I just snap a photo of it. Now Mobile recognizes it’s my laptop and starts a digital workflow, guiding me through choices to create my order. Once I submit my order, an IT workflow is initiated to deliver my new laptop. Voila! Getting help from IT is now as easy as ordering from Amazon.

Finally, our conference room turf wars are over. Now Mobile uses my phone’s location services to identify available rooms nearby and book one with a swipe. It even includes a QR code reader that lets me report AV issues and other conference room problems without opening a new app or contacting facilities.

Dos and dont’s of enterprise mobile

A successful enterprise mobile app doesn’t spring to life overnight. Any company that wants to deliver a great mobile experience for their employees should follow these best practices.

  • Find the right use cases. Look for areas inside your organization where you can innovate quickly while solving a real problem.
  • Ask users what they want. This sounds like an obvious step, but it often gets missed. When we were building Now Mobile, we ran focus groups to identify employee pain points.
  • Encourage experimentation. Some departments may be reluctant to change how they operate. Leading with great mobile experiences, versus cost savings, is a great way to win hearts and minds.
  • Don’t put a digital veneer on a broken process. Before you create a new digital experience, take time to simplify and automate the underlying processes.
  • Keep learning. If someone asks our chatbot a question it can’t answer, we mine that data and use it to fuel new conversations.
  • Make it human. Giving the app personality will increase adoption. If I ask the Now Mobile chatbot “What’s up?”, it gives me a list of pending tasks and a fun fact about ServiceNow.

Mobile is now

I’ve said for a while that the future is mobile. Well, the future is now. Mobile is the key for boosting productivity and attracting and retaining talent—especially younger workers.

More complex tasks may remain better suited to a web portal on a laptop or desktop. And I think we’ll always need larger-format devices to create content. But just as you see people using mobile phones at work when there’s a desk phone right in front of them, mobile experiences are becoming the exclusive territory of that device—even if there’s a laptop sitting six inches away.

Mobile presents an unprecedented opportunity to change work for the better. Is there anyone who doesn’t want less friction in their lives? We all just want to get stuff done. That’s pretty universal.
