Zabit Magomedsharipov was two fights into his UFC career and had already established himself as a fighter to watch in the featherweight division. The young competitor, who hailed from the combat sports hotbed of Dagestan, had won both of those contests by submission, earning two “Performance of the Night" bonuses in the process. In his third outing, Magomedsharipov was matched up against Kyle Bochniak on the pay-per-view portion of UFC 223, which took place in April 2018 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

When the fight began, Magomedsharipov was a -650 favorite over Bochniak, who was a +425 underdog.

Bochniak came out aggressive. He pushed Magomedsharipov backward, looking to make the fight a brawl. Magomedsharipov was unfazed. His calm expression never changed as he marked up Bochniak with kicks to the legs, body and head, while also efficiently using his hands.

While Magomedsharipov drew praise from the UFC commentating team for his technique and ability to always be in the correct position even if he missed a spinning kick, the most Bochniak could get from the commentators was an acknowledgment of his toughness.

In the second round, Magomedsharipov continued to dominate, adding his takedown game to the proceedings. By the middle of the stanza, Magomedsharipov had Bochniak bloody. When the round came to an end, the UFC commentators seemed overwhelmed by Magomedsharipov's skills. Joe Rogan said that he was going to rewatch the fight at home to try and make sense of what Magomedsharipov was doing inside the cage.

By the third round, Bochniak was getting by on heart and toughness, while Magomedsharipov showcased his ground game. The last minute of the fight was spent on the feet. Bochniak came on strong in the last 30 seconds as the two slugged it out at close range to the approval of the crowd, which gave the combatants a standing ovation as the final horn sounded. The fight ended up winning "Fight of the Night" honors. Magomedsharipov won the contest by unanimous decision.

Magomedsharipov followed that victory with a submission win over Brandon Davis and a unanimous decision over Jeremy Stephens. That winning streak earned Magomedsharipov the No. 5 ranking in the 145-pound division. On Saturday, he looks to take a big step toward a title fight when he meets Calvin Kattar in the main event of UFC Fight Night 163, which takes place at CSKA Arena in Moscow. The prelims begin at 11 a.m. ET on ESPN+, the main card follows on ESPN+ at 2:00 p.m. ET.

Before that fight goes down, watch Magomedsharipov's win over Bochniak.
